Intellectually capable young adults with autism have unique social, communication and emotional needs. This course will explore the socio-cultural aspects of equity and inclusion that individuals in this group encounter. It will also address the interrelationship of individual needs, therapy strategies, and the skills needed in order to navigate this socio-cultural context.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series. This course will detail the relationship between language and executive functions (EFs), and the nature of EF deficits in children with language disorders. The use of inner speech and self-talk to regulate behaviors and efforts, and the use of complex syntax as a tool to reason, plan, predict, and solve will be discussed. Additionally, the course will describe the use of hands-on problem solving, Socratic questions, and discovery learning to elicit language-based EFs.

This course will discuss how the stigma of stuttering, advocacy, empathy, caseload management, and the structure of various settings in which we work (e.g., schools, medical settings, university clinics) impact our work with people who stutter, across the lifespan. Case scenarios involving ethics and stuttering will be presented for participants' consideration.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. This course delineates individual metacognitive processes known as "executive functions" and the various developmental profiles of executive dysfunction in school-aged children. Three case studies will highlight the nature of the diagnostic challenges and lay a foundation for assessment principles to help the SLP determine best approaches to intervention.

Once eligible for services, students need well-crafted goals in order to meet expectations. This course will address writing SMART goals for students from collected data.

Elder abuse and neglect and child abuse and neglect are harsh realities. This course will identify the physical, clinical, and behavioral indicators of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse needed to identify and report to appropriate agencies. Participants will gain an improved awareness of warning signs of abuse, the clinician's role in reporting abuse, and the steps for reporting abuse and getting proper assistance.

This course addresses key issues in the treatment of early childhood stuttering, with a focus on less-direct and more-direct treatment approaches. The course will discuss ways that clinicians can draw upon various approaches to develop individualized treatment so that each child’s and family’s individual needs are addressed.

This course will serve as a primer on Down syndrome for practicing speech-language pathologists. The basics of the syndrome and common speech, language, voice and fluency issues will be addressed. Effective treatment strategies for improving communication across the lifespan will also be discussed.

Screening of swallow function is a well-regarded tool to identify individuals who are potentially at risk of dysphagia and in need of full swallow assessment, but the options are many and varied. This "back to basics" course will teach participants to make informed, evidence-based choices regarding appropriate screening tools specific to their particular patient populations and settings.

This course enables clinicians to evaluate the evidence obtained from the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation 3rd Edition (GFTA-3) results, including standard scores, error analyses, stimulability and intelligibility information, and emergence and mastery data. After this course, participants will be able to make appropriate placement decisions and recommendations and to explain test results in a meaningful way to parents and other stakeholders.
