Neuro/Cognition/TBI (Peds) CEU Courses for SLPs

This is Part 4 of a four-part series. Children with autism have stories to tell. This course describes the impact strong storytelling skills have on a child’s attention, executive functioning, and language abilities. How to use multimodal cues in the context of task-oriented movement activities and effective scaffolding of storytelling skills are addressed.

This is Part 1 of a two-part course. The impact of syntax on students' linguistic reasoning, metacognition, and future planning is described in this course. How to develop a strategic plan for language and executive functioning intervention is also discussed.

An introduction to pain science and management for the rehabilitation professional is provided in this course. Specifically, recognition of pain, the systemic and pervasive effects, and multifactorial treatment strategies for pain are addressed in this course.

Delayed developmental consequences of pediatric brain injury (BI) and their potential impact on school performance are described in this course. Practical methods for assessment and intervention that can be incorporated into school settings are identified, and strategies that encourage professional and family collaboration to assist students with BI across the educational continuum are described.

Based on the textbook Medical Speech-Language Pathology Across the Care Continuum, this course explores medical SLP across settings (including acute care, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, outpatient, home health and pediatrics), and collaborators, workflows, and diagnosis and treatment principles for each. Neuroimaging, pharmacology, and lab tests are discussed, and case studies demonstrate application of concepts across the care continuum.

This course builds on course 10193, “Executive Functioning: Intervention Principles and Strategies for School-Based SLPs,” and extends participants' knowledge base to encompass more advanced concepts and approaches for scaffolding executive function (EF). Specifically, behaviors that signal a need for intervention and strategies that target social and academic impacts of EF difficulties are described.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series. Implementation frameworks and team service delivery models that support K-12 students with executive functioning challenges are described. Strategies that build self-talk, time perception, and strategic planning for multi-step tasks are also discussed.

Using a case study format, this course describes how to develop interdisciplinary assessment and treatment plans for children preschool-age through young adults with executive functioning difficulties. The evidence-based strategies that are presented focus on integrating information from speech-language pathology, psychology, and special education professions.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. External symptoms and internal mental processes associated with executive functioning challenges are described in this course. Skill areas that can assist intervention planning, obstacles that multidisciplinary teams may face, and common barriers to generalization associated with current service delivery models are discussed.

Adolescent brain changes during puberty - the pruning effect that helps the brain become more specialized - are highlighted in this course. The activation and deactivation of different brain areas and the impact of these changes on behaviors and participation in life tasks are described. The relevance of this information to assessment and intervention planning is also discussed.
