Language Disorder(s) CEU Courses for SLPs

This course builds on course 10193, “Executive Functioning: Intervention Principles and Strategies for School-Based SLPs,” and extends participants' knowledge base to encompass more advanced concepts and approaches for scaffolding executive function (EF). Specifically, behaviors that signal a need for intervention and strategies that target social and academic impacts of EF difficulties are described.

This is Part 3 of a four-part series. It is estimated that approximately 80% of children with autism present with significant, generalized motor delays. This course describes how SLPs can integrate movement into their therapy sessions to treat the whole child while improving non-verbal and verbal communication skills.

This is Part 1 of a two-part course. The impact of syntax on students' linguistic reasoning, metacognition, and future planning is described in this course. How to develop a strategic plan for language and executive functioning intervention is also discussed.

The use of shared book reading as a powerful tool for facilitating language and literacy, and the integration of yoga into this practice, are discussed in this course. Methods for implementing StoryBook Yoga, as well as its positive impacts on the brain and on the development of the whole child across domains are described.

The evidence supporting mindfulness practices, and methods for integrating them into shared book-reading activities in order to enhance a child’s ability to listen, look, and learn are discussed in this course. Specific books that are appropriate for such therapy activities are described.

SLPs hold comprehensive, valuable expertise in language unique among professionals working with school-aged children. This course encourages SLPs to embrace and share this expertise and apply it to therapy guided by five evidence-supported principles. Activities, templates and lesson plans for effective, efficient, educationally relevant small group and classroom-based intervention are described.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series. The connections between reading comprehension and areas of language such as vocabulary, morphosyntax and social communication are described in this course. Implications for intervention/instruction and collaboration with educators are also discussed.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. This course provides SLPs with foundational knowledge needed to directly address and collaboratively support reading comprehension across all grade levels. Models of language and reading comprehension, comprehension processes vs. products, instruction in comprehension skills vs. strategies, factors in reading comprehension difficulties, and connections to general education are discussed.
